Dear Sangha,

As most of you know, our dear Sangha member Saigyo Terrance Keenan passed away on May 25 in Kealties, Durrus, Cork, Ireland. His beloved son, Myogen Conor Keenan, and daughter, Bryna Keenan Subherwal, were with him. He had been ill for a long time. Saigyo was predeceased in 2019 by his wife, Jikai Jane MacLeod Keenan. The family had lived in Syracuse for several decades.

We will hold a 49-day memorial service at HoenJi on Sunday, July 14, at 11:15 a.m. We invite the Sangha to come to the zendo for short morning service at 9 a.m., followed by in-person dokusan until 11, and then the memorial service.

Myogen and his wife, Kazumi Sasahara Keenan, and Bryna and her husband, Maneesh Subherwal, will attend, as well as friends from the community. A luncheon will be served in the Forman House at 1 p.m.

We ask that everyone RSVP by July 1 by emailing admin@hoenji.org with your name and anyone you may be bringing. Let us know if you would like to stay for the luncheon.

I was in Kyoto, Japan, when Saigyo died. Throughout the ceremonies for Sogen Yamakawa Geika as he formally took on the position of Kancho, Supreme Abbot of MyoshinJi, I felt Saigyo by my side, as he was for so many years.

We sat together in my attic when he first began; he was the first monk I ordained, at Alverna Heights, the Sisters of St. Francis Retreat Center in Fayetteville where we used to hold our sesshins; he attended many sesshins at Dai Bosatsu Zendo; he was President of the Board when we were negotiating to purchase our home at 266 W. Seneca Turnpike. I just came upon the entry in my journal at DBZ’s 1996 Anniversary Sesshin: “Saigyo arrived with the signed contract to purchase 266—now a new era begins for HoenJi!” And he will be with me as I sit at DBZ this Anniversary Sesshin, 28 years later.

Gassho,

Shinge Roko Sherry Chayat
