Dharma Study

What is Dharma Study?

Dharma Study is the exploration of Buddhist teachings—texts, precepts, and historical wisdom—that help illuminate the path of practice. Through reading, discussion, and reflection, practitioners deepen their understanding of core principles like compassion, emptiness, and mindfulness. It’s not about scholarly knowledge—it’s about letting the teachings come alive in everyday life.

Led by Shinge Roshi, Dharma Study is offered in-person and online via Zoom. It is held one Sunday of the month, from 1:00-2:30 p.m. ET.

We are reading The Surangama Sutra, the 2009 edition by Buddhist Text Translation Society, with excerpts from the Commentary by Ven. Hsuan Hua. A few copies are available for in-person attendees for $30 in the Dharma hall, cash and checks only, please. Online attendees may purchase the hardcover book from the Buddhist Text Translation Society’s website. A Kindle edition is available, as well as a free, downloadable PDF file of the entire text. All are welcome and no prior reading is necessary.
