Mandala Day, Dharma Study

On April 21, starting at 9 a.m., we will have special Mandala Day chanting, as we do on the third Sunday of every month, followed by two periods of zazen and temple caretaking.

At 11:30 a.m. in the Forman House, we’d like to share an important step in the development of our new website with you. As the first part of that project, Damian Vallelonga of Switchstance Marketing has conducted interviews with Sangha members and friends to discover our unique and shared connections to our temple and this practice. Along with his additional research, he will present the Zen Center of Syracuse Messaging Playbook. The presentation will also be available on Zoom for those unable to attend in person.

At 12:30 we’ll gather in the Forman House for tea and bring-your-own lunch.

At 1 p.m. Shinge Roshi will lead Dharma Study in the Forman House and on Zoom. We will read and discuss a passage from Part III of The Platform Sutra: The Zen Teaching of Hui-Neng, translated by Red Pine. All are welcome, and no prior reading is necessary. Copies of the book are available for purchase in the Dharma Hall. Photocopies of this month’s section are provided for those who don’t have their own books.

We will start on Section 49. When we have finished reading The Platform Sutra in a few months, the next text to be discussed will be the Surangama Sutra, the new translation by Buddhist Text Translation Society, 2017 edition with excerpts from Commentary by Ven. Hsuan Hua. We will arrange for some copies to be available for purchase in the Dharma hall.
