The Zen Way of Cooking
January 20 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

* This workshop is full and there is a waitlist. We will try to make this workshop available again *
Muken Mark Barber Sensei, head monk and Dai Tenzo (in charge of meal preparation) at Dai Bosatsu Zendo, a monastery in the Catskills, will offer a workshop sharing the joys and methods of “cooking as practice” for Zen Sesshin (Retreats). Muken says, “I have some interesting ideas for the Zen Cooking presentation that I think will help the attendees connect with the deep presence, subtle attention and profound gratitude that arise in tenzo practice.”
As Eido Tai Shimano Roshi wrote in the Foreword of the book 3 Bowls: Vegetarian Recipes from an American Zen Buddhist Monastery (Dai Bosatsu Zendo), by Seppo Ed Farrey, “Cooking is not only the preparation of food but a practice of spirituality. A practice of spirituality means not wasting even the stem of a vegetable. It involves economy of movement, punctuality, and beauty of presentation.”
Muken Sensei will introduce and demonstrate these elements in this hands-on workshop. Those attending will have the opportunity to eat what they practice! Participants will be prepared to serve as assistant tenzos during upcoming retreats, and may even become Dai Tenzo at the Zen Center in the future.
The workshop is offered for free, but donations are gratefully accepted.
Please enroll by Friday, Jan. 9.
