Buddha’s Birthday Celebration

April 12 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

In the Japanese tradition, Buddha’s birthday is April 8. Since we always celebrate this joyful occasion with children, who enact the story of Shakyamuni Buddha’s birth, we will hold this event on Sunday, April 12, with morning service at 9 a.m. and a period of meditation in the Carriage House Zendo. Then we’ll move to the Joshua Forman House, where a special altar will be set up featuring a statue of the Baby Buddha in a flower pavilion.

The celebration begins at 11:15; bring your children, grandchildren, and friends. We’ll take turns bathing the Baby Buddha figure with sweet tea as our visiting shakuhachi master, Marco Karaku Burmester, plays the bamboo flute, and then we’ll sing a special verse. Shinge Roshi will read the story as told by Nyogen Senzaki many years ago, and children will portray the various roles.

A potluck lunch and birthday cake will follow. We appreciate food and monetary donations. Food offerings must be vegetarian; please label anything that contains gluten and/or dairy.

Zoom is only available for the morning service.
