Forman House Bicentennial

To mark the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Joshua Forman House in the historic Onondaga Valley, the Zen Center is presenting a series of joyous, healing events.

Events: 
Sand Mandala
Thursday, October 7, 2010 - 1:30pm - Sunday, October 10, 2010 - 9:00pm

Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery will create an intricate and vivid mandala (a circular sand painting) from October 7th to the 10th, from 9:30 am to 5 pm each day at the Zen Center of Syracuse’s Joshua Forman House. It is one of a series of events to mark the Zen Center’s observation of the bicentennial anniversary of the house built by Joshua Forman, founder and first president of the Village of Syracuse, at 266 West Seneca Turnpike.

Honoring and Giving Thanks to the Onondaga Waters

We rise every morning to a new day, wash our faces, brush our teeth, make coffee, yet are we grateful for the water that allows us to live this day? On Saturday, October 9, leaders from the Onondaga Nation and the Zen Center of Syracuse will conduct “Honoring and Giving Thanks to the Onondaga Waters,” a series of ceremonies, and will dedicate a large-scale stone sculpture by Haudenosaunee artist Tom Huff. The events, which are free and open to the public, will begin at 1:30 p.m. along the Onondaga Creek at the Zen Center of Syracuse, 266 West Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse.

Silent Art Auction
Sunday, October 10, 2010 - 4:00pm - Sunday, October 17, 2010 - 7:00pm

The Zen Center's silent art auction, Oct. 10-17, is the culminating event of a month-long series marking the bicentennial of the Joshua Forman House, built by Syracuse's founder and first president. The auction features art from the personal collection of Shinge Roshi Sherry Chayat, and showcases works by local artists of international repute. 

Soh Daiko Drum Troupe Workshop
Saturday, October 16, 2010 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm

Did you ever want to learn how to play the giant drums of Japan? Soh Daiko Drum Troupe will give a workshop at 4-6 pm on Saturday, October 16, 2010. Registration is $15, all levels of experience are welcome. To register, please contact the Zen Center.

Sunday, October 17, 2010 - 5:30pm - 7:30pm

The energy and excitement of the giant drums of peace will rock the neighborhood in recognition of the historic Zen Center home built by the first president of the village of Syracuse, Joshua Forman two hundred years ago.  The concert will take place on the front porch of the Forman House at the Zen Center of Syracuse, 266 W Seneca Turnpike.
