Zen is both something we are -- our true nature expressing itself moment by moment and something we do a disciplined practice through which we can realize the joy of being.

Zen is not a belief system to which one converts; rather, it is an age-old practice of mindfulness through which we cultivate inner peace, so that we can respond intuitively and directly in any circumstances.

Instead of trying to catch up to where we think we ought to be, or trying to redirect the flow of the universe, through zazen—sitting with lucid awareness—we allow ourselves to experience life as it really is: vibrant, unimpeded, interconnected, ever-present.

As our practice matures, our motivation changes. We may start out with a desire for personal growth and serenity, but as we continue to sit, deep feelings of gratitude bring about a profound shift. Quite naturally we dedicate ourselves to a path of wisdom and compassion as expressed in the Great Vows we chant each day:

However innumerable all beings are
I vow to save them all

However inexhaustible delusions are
I vow to extinguish them all

However immeasurable Dharma teachings are
I vow to master them all

However endless the Buddha's way is
I vow to follow it
