Shinge Sherry Chayat Roshi, Abbot of the Zen Center of Syracuse, will teach the basic principles of meditation and present a talk on its benefits in everyday life.

After meditating on her own as a child, she began a formal practice in 1967 at the Zen Studies Society in New York City. She trained under Eido Shimano Roshi, Hakuun Yasutani and S?en Nakagawa.

In 1992, she became the first American woman to receive Dharma Transmission in the Rinzai school of Buddhism. Shinge Roshi has been guiding meditation to students in Syracuse since 1976, and is currently the abbot of three Buddhist temples in New York, and the Zen Studies Society (zenstudies.org).
