The Zen Center of Syracuse marks its tenth year at the historic Joshua Forman House and property with an exhibition about Joshua Forman, founder and first president of the village of Syracuse, whose legislative efforts led to the building of the Erie Canal. The exhibition, "Syracuse Founder Joshua Forman: His Life and Times," opened Sunday Oct. 22 with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m., and runs through Jan. 6, 2007.
Funding was received through a DeFrancisco Heritage Grant, and the Erie Canal Museum and Onondaga Historical Association have provided research assistance and materials for the show.
On view is an oil portrait of Forman, an early real estate indenture for land Forman and others acquired for Onondaga Hollow's first religious organization, Forman's letters, many newspaper articles about him and the Forman House, a model of an Erie Canal lock, and other historical materials. The gallery is open daily for one hour after scheduled meditation at the Zen Center, during yoga on Fridays and Sundays, and by appointment.
