The evening will begin with zazen, a talk by Shinge Roshi, and a special New Year's feast. Then everyone will be invited to welcome in 2016 with the traditional Joya no Kane chanting and ringing of the konsho (big outdoors temple gong) 108 times, ending at midnight and followed by refreshments. This is the Year of the Sheep, and DBZ has invited West Coast fiber/installation artist Mandy Greer for a two-week artist's residency at DBZ that will culminate with Family Weekend. She will lead the creation of a participatory fiber-based environmental installation using old clothes and wool sourced from ethically run sheep farms (click here to read more about this project). Dai Bosatsu Zendo, a beautiful, traditional Zen monastery on 1,400 acres in the Catskill Mountains of New York State, is offering summer internship opportunities. Interns will join residents working in the monastery's organic garden, chopping and stacking wood, maintaining grounds and trails, helping with vegetarian meals in the monastery's professional kitchen, preparing guest rooms, temple cleaning, laundry, and tasks related to special skills interns may have. The celebration will begin with a Dharma talk by Shinge Roshi on Thursday afternoon, followed by a delicious vegetarian feast. O-Bon honors our ancestors, family members, and loved ones who have passed away, as well as the hungry ghosts within and outside us. Come and help residents and Interim students prepare for O-Bon, making traditional treats and lanterns, cleaning and doing outdoor work including building the structure for the ceremonial bonfire.
